Blogger Vs Wordpress

Blog is the hottest web 2.0 currently for it's simplicity and capabilities to implement critical features easily. It is good source of knowledge and information. That’s why every organization has its own separate blog integrated with it's main webpage.
Many of my readers asked me which blogging platform is the best? Is Wordpress better than Blogger?? etc. So in this post I will closely look each and every feature of blogger and wordpress. I will compare their features and finally I will give my opinion, which one we should use.
Background: On August 23, 1999, Blogger was launched by Pyra Labs. In February 2003, Pyra Labs was acquired by Google under undisclosed terms. In 2004, Google purchased Picasa; it integrated Picasa and its photo sharing utility Hello into Blogger, allowing users to post photos to their blogs. On May 9, 2004, Blogger introduced a major redesign, adding features such as web standards-compliant templates, individual archive pages for posts, comments, and posting by email. On August 14, 2006, Blogger launched its latest version in beta, code named "Invader", alongside the gold release. This migrated users to Google servers and included some new features. In December 2006, this new version of Blogger was taken out of beta. By May 2007, Blogger had completely moved over to Google operated servers. In October 2008, Turkey blocked access to Blogger. Blogger was ranked 16 on the list of top 50 domains in terms of number of unique visitors in 2007.
Background: WordPress is an open source blog publishing application. WordPress is the official successor of b2\cafelog, developed by Michel Valdrighi. The name WordPress was suggested by Christine Selleck, a friend of lead developer Matt Mullenweg. WordPress first appeared in 2003 as a joint effort between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little to create a fork of b2. In 2004 the licensing terms for the competing Movable Type package were changed by Six Apart, and many of its users migrated to WordPress – causing a marked and continuing growth in WordPress's popularity. In 2007 WordPress won a Packt Open Source CMS Award.
Comparison of blogger and wordpress:

I think you like blogger more. Wordpress is for geeks & nerds, who like to setup their own space on the net, without creating a website all by themselves. But blogger is like for noobs. They just gotta publish their stuff. But wordpress is different. And, wordpress also wordpress has a lot of plugins ('FeedBurner FeedSmith' plugin makes full FeedBurner integration possible) , which makes it way more powerful. By the way, I like you blog and the posts you make. I can see that you are working really hard for your in-blog reviews. Most new bloggers just make a copy from other blogs to theirs, even without giving credit. Buy I like what you do - the way blogging should be done - reviewing everything by yourself, and thereby experiencing it... Keep up the good work...

nice post. But i dont get 1 thing. If blogger is more flexible as u have stated, then y is wordpress more popular? is there something you might have missed out in the comparison?

i guess this post is for people who don't require to buy webspace or don't want a completely custom blog.

@ sid: Wordpress is the most popular blogging engine because:
1. It has a "5 minute installatio" feature which lives upto its name.(you ned this feature when you set a blog on your domain).
2. Very strong community which keeps on providing plugins, themes, templates etc.

I haven't researched on the architecture and all but wordpress is pretty much the blogging engine to have if you don't know much about programming and you want an elegant looking blog/website.

@ Ranjeet: You have missed out on the serious blogging platforms like Movable Type(Perl based not PHP), Typepad, TextPattern(This one is very simple to you and basically for designers)

PS: Movable Type(MT) is fairs all when comes to security. www.barackobama.com is hosted using MT.

You reviewed wordpress.com which is a company that uses the open source application to make money. You did not review wordpress.org. You should really do your homework. They are vastly different. I personally agree with you, I like blogger better. I'm a huge Google fan.

No mate, you should put it as wordpress.com instead of wordpress.org. As Taran & Nick™ said, wordpress.com is company that uses the open source application to make money, made by the same people who made wordpress.

But if you compare on-domain/3`rd party hosting, like you have installed blogger on your domain,

The Table

So, According to your table (which needs to be corrected), yes blogger.com is better than wordpress.com. But, by my table I strongly believe Wordpress .org/platform is much more user-friendly / better than blogger platform.

I use freeblogzone, I'm sick of blogger and wordpress.

FreeBlogZone.com is a new website, but brings many unique features in which both blogger and wordpress do not have.

They have a great support team, and seem to update things very frequently.

I’ve been always so indecisive to start my own blog as I wasn’t sure that it’ll gain popularity. I am running the blog for three months already and I am pretty happy with the results.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith.
