Blogger Vs Wordpress

Blog is the hottest web 2.0 currently for it's simplicity and capabilities to implement critical features easily. It is good source of knowledge and information. That’s why every organization has its own separate blog integrated with it's main webpage.
Many of my readers asked me which blogging platform is the best? Is Wordpress better than Blogger?? etc. So in this post I will closely look each and every feature of blogger and wordpress. I will compare their features and finally I will give my opinion, which one we should use.
Background: On August 23, 1999, Blogger was launched by Pyra Labs. In February 2003, Pyra Labs was acquired by Google under undisclosed terms. In 2004, Google purchased Picasa; it integrated Picasa and its photo sharing utility Hello into Blogger, allowing users to post photos to their blogs. On May 9, 2004, Blogger introduced a major redesign, adding features such as web standards-compliant templates, individual archive pages for posts, comments, and posting by email. On August 14, 2006, Blogger launched its latest version in beta, code named "Invader", alongside the gold release. This migrated users to Google servers and included some new features. In December 2006, this new version of Blogger was taken out of beta. By May 2007, Blogger had completely moved over to Google operated servers. In October 2008, Turkey blocked access to Blogger. Blogger was ranked 16 on the list of top 50 domains in terms of number of unique visitors in 2007.
Background: WordPress is an open source blog publishing application. WordPress is the official successor of b2\cafelog, developed by Michel Valdrighi. The name WordPress was suggested by Christine Selleck, a friend of lead developer Matt Mullenweg. WordPress first appeared in 2003 as a joint effort between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little to create a fork of b2. In 2004 the licensing terms for the competing Movable Type package were changed by Six Apart, and many of its users migrated to WordPress – causing a marked and continuing growth in WordPress's popularity. In 2007 WordPress won a Packt Open Source CMS Award.
Comparison of blogger and wordpress:
    Features Blogger     Wordpress

WHY TERRORIST ATTACK IS SO COMMON IN INDIA?

Ok, this is not geeky, this is not related to internet at all. But this is something really serious. This is related to the country I live in. Yes, this is about India.
What India is all about……
1) Cricket (On Play ground)
2) Sex (On internet)
3) Unemployment (Market crash'08)
4) Politics & Politicians (Jai Shivaji!! Jai Maharashtra!!!)
5) Bollywood
6) Terrorist Attack!!! ( Anywhere, Any Place, Any time)

The financial capital of India was again taken into terror by Islamic militants. Although it’s a common occurrence for India now, but this time it was different. The terrorists attacked the top 7 star Hotels of India including Hotel Taj Mahal, Hotel Oberoi Sherton and Nariman House. There was also a fearless attack on Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway station Mumbai, the busiest railway station in the world. Apart from killing common man (which is common in itself) this time the killings include the ACP of Mumbai, The Anti terrorists Squad(ATS) chief, and A Super Cop & encounter specialist. Also a few Americans (remember FEW in India is VERY HUGE in America) and Britishers were also killed. So, this time it was really different!!

I was wondering why terrorist attack is so common in India. Countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, who are already standing on the verge of bankruptcy are regularly attacking the biggest democracy of the world, turn by turn. So what is the reason? India is the reason in itself. Yes it’s “The Democracy”. May be it’s the time for a change, may be it’s the time when India really needs a HITler.

Two people meet in a beer bar
One : Where are you from?
Second: I am from NY.
One: Oh…..You too an American? Common man let’s have a beer together.
Another set of two people meet at the same chair fifteen minutes later.
One: Where you from?
Second: I am from India….
One: Where in India?
Second: I am from Bihar……
One: Eeew You are gross!!!!! I am a Marathi Fuck You!!!!

Democracy has given innumerable number of political parties to India. These parties have divided common man into different groups like Hindus and muslims, Muslims and other religions, North Indians and Marathis, Hindi speaking and non hindi speaking and so on and so forth. So for any externalites it’s very easy to break through the castle. Where were Indian security guards, when terrorist were fearlessly crossing the water boundaries of India. Probably they were giving security to Mr. Raj Thackrey who was facing severe threats from North Indian Terrorists. I wonder what Mr. Thackrey is doing right now to upkeep the good cause and safety of matahis of Mumbai. I am sure the bullet wouldn’t have asked the state of a person before hitting him. So where are the sainiks of MNS? Why the “NATIONAL” security guards are risking their lives? Probably because NSG never thinks in terms of Marathis and Biharis. They work for a NATION not for a Vote bank. I would sincerely request Mr. Thackrey to learn something from the spirit of NSG.

One morning in Mumbai a frustrated common man came down on the roads with a pistol and hijacked a bus. He wanted to kill a politician. He was shot in the Head. I was thinking why these terrorists never hit politicians in India. Why would they hit someone who is working hard for their cause only.

Overall in India, educated beaurocrats have no say at all. It is the elected politicians who decides everything for us including our safety. And probably their first priority is there security, second priority is how can they earn more and more votes and lastly if resources permits our security will be thought of. So why should we expect to remain secure?

What should we do then?
1) Start voting consciously. Think in terms of the leader’s qualification rather than religion and region.
2) This is our country. Together we can make it secure. It just needs a bit of solidarity.
3) DON’T EXPECT ANYTHING from government. Charity begins at home. Don’t be a part of terrorism anyways. Start thinking about shunning terrorism on individual part. Let the Government think themselves what action they should take for our security.
4) Be cautious when you are out. Report the police immediately if you see or hear any thing suspectible. Don’t be afraid of legal consequences. Remember it’s either legal pains OR your life.

At last Geekonnet Team Salutes the NATIONAL SECURITY GUARDS for making us safe.
Jai Hind!

Pakistani Hackers hacked ONGC website

Pakistani hackers hacked ONGC website today. The message left by hackers is:

Pakistan Cyber Army

"This is a message from PCA for HMG(script_kiddies) in return to the ogra defacement.

Backoff , go read some course books else you will loose both , your name and this game.

We will literally SMOKE YOUR DOORS OFF like other groups did before.

This is just a warning to Indian authorities either
to launch inquiry against HMG or get ready for more action.

We were sleeping but not Dead.

Now Face the consequences

HAroon + HAmza + ABunasar

Naveed + Hassan

Pakistan ZindaBad"

See the screenshot :

HMG is a group of indian hackers, who called themselves "Guards of Hindustan". This group HMG is very active on Orkut and they have hacked a number of Pakistani communities and after taking ownership, turned those communities into anti-Pakistan ones. HMG recently  hacked the official site of OGRA (Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority of Pakistan) on 18th of this month. In response of this Pakistani hackers hacked ONGC (Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd).

It’s for sure that Indian hackers (HMG) will retaliate now. Let’s see how much high profile that victim website will be. :P

New Gmail Themes

Ok, this is the latest buzz from Google. Now you can dress up your gmail with different themes. Thank god Google is doing something for gmail, which is still in its beta version. Actually I was pissed off by gmail's geeky theme and I think you too were. So don't worry now, Google has launched 30 different themes for gmail today.

How to change gmail theme? Its very easy to change theme. Just go to "Settings" and look for "Theme" tab. Click on "Theme" tab, choose your favourite theme and you are done. :) If you are not able to see "Theme" tab than just wait for while. Google team has announced that they are rolling out theme to everyone over the next couple of days, if you don't see theme yet, check back soon. Or you can do one more thing just clean your cache and reload the gmail. You may be able to see the theme.

Dynamic theme: Similar to the themes for iGoogle, some of these new themes also change according to the local weather and time of day. My favorite theme is the "Tree" theme which changes scenery with time, depending on the season and the location you chose, so that the theme resembles the landscape you see looking out of your window. I live in Mumbai (India). The sky is clear and it's warm out here.So i can see a clear sky and a dusty tree instead of a green one.I did an experiment, I saved my location on Gmail as Reykjavík, Iceland and as I can see bulk of clouds and flakes of snow on my theme, I guess it's cold and snowing out there:). So you guys can also change your location and know how the whether is on the other side of the world. Thanks to gmail. It dosent tracks our IP to find our location :P.

To dress up a site with your favorite theme is not a unique feature. People were waiting for it from long time. This feature is already available on all social networking sites (including Orkut) where you can change the theme of your home. What I am thinking now is that, what will be the next complaint from the user side. I think they will demand for more flexibility in this feature. The most obvious demand would be that, the user will want to upload self designed themes on gmail. This facility is already available on MySpace, friendster etc..

Gmail already created a revolution for it's simplicity and speed when it was launched. But still gmail has less no. of users (around 50 Million) in comparison to MSN and yahoo mail. I think this move by google will attract  more users now. So what theme you guys are using?

Think QUALITY T-shirts, think Inkfruit!

Promises are like crying babies in a theater, they should be carried out at once. So the geekonnet team is back to keep one of my promises. You must be wondering why i used geekonnet team. Yes, you are right I got a new partner to help me cope with the overwhelming response you guys have given me. Thanks a lot again.
Coming back to the point, I promised earlier to make a new elaborate column about Indian startups. I am delighted to inform that here is the first successful endeavor of the geekonnet team.
Inkfruit is a place for people to submit, discover and buy amazing custom t-shirt designs created by artists from around the world. So if you feel any hidden designing talent within you, log onto www.inkfruit.com., know the current theme, start designing a t-shirt right now and submit your design. If you win, inkfruit will print your design on a T-shirt and you get 5 T-shirts free, to gift to your friends and family. In parallel your designed T-shirt will be launched in the market for online sale. The best and the most exciting part is that all the T-shirts will carry the name of the designer.
Yes, I am also as excited as you guys are and I too wanted to know more about the people behind inkfruit. So I grabbed the opportunity to write about the company as soon as I got a call from them. Here is an excerpt from the three hour conversation we had with one of the founders of inkfruit. I ask you all to hold your nerve and read through long post. You will definitely get benefited if you are thinking to have a venture of your own.

THE PERSON
Kashyap Dalal, Age 27
Civil Engineering, B.Tech.  I.I.T. Bombay, 2002
Master in Business administration I.I.M. Lucknow, 2004
Worked for Hindustan Lever Limited (2004-2006)

Q&A
We (The Geeks): How did you get the idea to start inkfruit?
Kashyap (The Fruit): We (I and Navneet) went off to watch a movie. I was wearing a Tantra T-shirt. So was the person sitting next to me .. This kind of started off one of our bitchin sessions about not getting any exclusive t-shirts in India. Thats how we started thinking about doing something in this space. How we came up on the exact model is quite a long story ..

The Geeks: How long have you been in business?
The Fruit: We left our jobs around Dec 2007. Since then we've been working on Inkfruit.

The Geeks: What is your niche market?
The Fruit: We offer t-shirts with outstanding graphics created by the best designers across the world. This is through an online design competition where we have regular participation from the best in the design world. Owing to the diversity of the design contributors, our collection offers something for everyone! There is a very high probability that everyone will like something at Inkfruit. Buying a Great T-shirt is not an accident anymore.

The Geeks: Who are your competitors?
The Fruit: In the Offline space, players like Pepe, Lee, Tantra etc. Internationally, players like threadless, designbyhumans, splittheatoms, etc. Within India we have sites like Myntra and Pringoo who deal in customized t-shirts. There is some overlap with them as well.

The Geeks: How do you differentiate your products from that of others?
The Fruit: Our key differentiator is our model of involving customers in the design process. We have people from all over the world designing for us and thousands of people vote on the submissions. This ensures that the t-shirts launched under Inkfruit are the best designs ever! We are dedicated to promoting the artists behind these great designs as well by recognizing them on the t-shirt.

The Geeks: How do you advertise your product?
The Fruit: We mainly do this through helping our users spread the word about their designs. So if you have your design selling on Inkfruit, you can send across mails to others about your T-shirt available for sale. We also do relevant offline activities like being present at relevant college fests etc.

The Geeks: What obstacles have you overcome?
The Fruit: Starting a company is quite an interesting experience. Small things like registering the company are quite tricky in India - we were stuck with the wrong guy doing it for us and stretched on for like 3 months! Its actually been a series of minor obstacles that we have overcome over the last year and a half. Can't think of any that would be fun to talk about. :)

The Geeks: What are the rewards of owing own business over a nine to five job?
The Fruit: The two scenarios are not even comparable! The amount of involvement you have with your own business is Complete in every sense. The line between professional and personal life kind of thins away. And the thrill you experience on overcoming obstacles and celebrating good news is much more intense!

The Geeks: What background skills, knowledge and experiences help you in your business?
The Fruit: Having worked in Levers, the nuts and bolts of sales and marketing were already known to me. This surely helped. Apart from that Navneet had experience in operations which helped a lot as well. But apart from these, starting a new company is a lot about applying common sense and just taking things as they come.

The Geeks: Are there ways you could use technology to improve your business?
The Fruit: Definitely. We are completely focused on improving the user experience on the website by doing innovative things. One thing we are working on is to give our customers sms alerts about their order on our website to track the shipment. We are also working on social media applications to help our users stay more connected.

The Geeks: How many retail outlets do you have and where are they?
The Fruit: We have already started 3 retail outlets in Bandra, Churchgate and Colaba in Mumbai.

The Geeks: Considering that a similar e-Commerce website called billoreilly.com was hacked recently how much security for credit card information etc. are you providing for your customer?
The Fruit: Our online transactions are managed by ccavenue which is presently the most secure transaction gateway. Inkfruit does not store your credit card or online bank account information . So hacking doesn’t seem a problem for us.

The Geeks: Where do you want to see yourself 5 years down the line?
The Fruit: Well, that is tough one to answer. 5 years down the line we want to see a range of products (tshirts, posters, bags) under Inkfruit. If things go well we hope to launch exclusive inkfruit stores at select locations.

The Geeks: Any suggestions for future entrepreneur?
The Fruit: I'm sure you have heard this before - but succeeding in starting a company is all about great execution and quick execution. We have learnt it the hard way that quality and speed of execution are most important. You can't compromise either one! Apart from this, holding your nerve at the right times is important too. Every startup goes through a phase where things will took mighty tough - you just have to walk through it and do your best.

If you have any suggestions for inkfruit feel free to pour in your valuables. Write as comment both positive and negative views about Inkfruit. I will forward your comments and suggestions to the owner of the website. And yes If you think that I am missing something if you wanted to know about the venture mail me/comment your questions.  My email ID is ranjeet@geekonnet.com. I will try to include those questions in the forth coming interviews.

Chrome Review Part-II

I would like to thank again to my readers for their huge responses in chrome review part-I. They have also asked few questions regarding chrome. So in this post I would like to answer their questions along with other features like security, theme, performance etc.
Lets see and analyze it's other features:
5) Incognito Window: This is chrome's another cool feature. Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved however. This is similar to Internet Explorer-8's private mode. Firefox 3.1 (beta 1) released on October 14th, also has private mode.
One of my readers name "Jimmie" has asked this question:
JIMMIE October 14, 2008 12:54 AM
this way if i keep on opening censored sites most of the time on crome..then even when i restart crome i ll get the same webpage or what??? This may be a public embarresment.
Jimmie don't worry. Whenever you open any censored website, try to open it in Incognito window. The short cut for this is Ctrl+Shift+N or Click on "Control the Current page" icon which is just beside the address bar and then click on "New Incognito Window".
6) Session Recovery: Like other browsers chrome also has this feature. Chrome doesn't offer this feature as default. Its very easy to set. Go to Tools->Option and click on the "Restore the pages that were opened last" radio button. You can also set your homepage and default search engine. See the picture,
7) Performance: According to my own experience, tested on windows-XP, with AMD Athlone 3000+ and 512 MB RAM, Chrome is little bit faster than Firefox 3.0.1 and IE-7 to load a page. I also observed an Interesting thing about chrome. Chrome takes more time to load Gmail than Firefox and IE. This is amazing :).
My another reader "Parag" has asked this "Hope you provide some performance comparisons on the next post"
So I compared the memory usages by Chrome, Firefox and IE for single tab with same website opened on each browser. Chrome uses 20,220K, IE uses 58,092K and Firefox uses 108,632K of memory. Since I use many addons of firefox so firefox takes more memory. Chrome uses less memory in comparison to what Firefox and IE use. I also observed that initial pop out time for chrome is less than the initial pop out times of firefox and Internet explorer.
8) Securities: one day after releasing of first public beta version of Chrome, a security vulnerability was found. This vulnerability was because Google used old version of Webkit for Chrome. Just after this a Vietnamese Security company Bach Khoa Internet Security found a buffer-overflow vulnerability in Chrome.
9) Theme: You like Chrome but you don't like it's look and feel? Don't worry, now you can also dress up your chrome with different theme like what other browsers have. Go to http://www.themesforchrome.com/, download your favorite theme and install it. How can you install chrome theme:
Download It to a separate directory and copy it over. The file needs to stay named "default.dll" and placed in this directory:
Windows XP Users:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\[Version]\Themes\
Windows Vista Users:
C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\[Version]\Themes\
Make sure you create a backup of your original "default.dll".
That is the end of Chrome reviews. Hope you liked It. If you find anything new or interesting about Chrome, do mail me at ranjeet@geekonnet.com or leave that as comment of this post. I will publish that thing as addition of this post. If I observe anything new about Chrome then I will surely let you know. Thanks for reading and happy Diwali to all of you.

Chrome Review Part-I

It has been almost 1 and half months since launch of chrome. Chrome is now a well known browser. I am also using it from last 1 and half months, and found some good as well as bad points about chrome. Here I am going to explore chrome's features and will compare them with other leading browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer etc. I am planning to divide this review in two parts - Chrome Review Part-I and Part-II in order to make the post short and interesting.
Lets see its different features and comparisons with other internet browsers :

1)The Simplest Interface: The first thing you will notice is it's simple, minimalist interface. Other browsers like Firefox and Internet explorer have lots of buttons and tabs. They have at least 3 rows of buttons, bars and menus etc. But the chrome has only two rows. See the screen shots of the different web browsers compared with chrome.
Another main difference you might have noticed is that other browsers have two separate boxes - one for URL typing and other for searching, but chrome has only one address box used for both purposes.
Some people hate such interface, they like more buttons and bars to make their work easier. But other people like it. They want to see more space on page. I like this interface. Do you like this interface of chrome?

2)Most visited page: This is the most useful feature of chrome. When you open chrome it shows the most visited pages by you. This helps you to start your favorite websites without typing URLs. In comparison Firefox restores the old session or your homepage or blank page. Internet explorer gives either blank page or homepage when a new tab is opened. This little thing is something which increases browsing speed.

3) Isolated Tab: This is the most famous feature of chrome. Chrome creates new individual process for each tab. The benefit of this feature is that your browser will not crash. If you visit a page which hangs up (it is very common in case of java and flash), instead of shutting down whole browser, just close that particular tab. The cons of this feature is that it uses more memory because it creates new individual process for each tab.

4)Dynamic Tab: This is the coolest feature of chrome. If you want to open any website in new browser window just drag the tab and pull it down. That particular tab will be opened in new browser window. No need to do right click and open in new window like Firefox and internet explorer. Internet Explorer and Firefox both do not allow to drag tab and all.

This feature is very useful while comparing two or more than two pages simultaneously.

There are more features like security, chrome theme, session restore etc.. I will explore and compare these features in my next post. Thanx for reading. Write your chrome experiences as comment of this post.
To be continued ...

Hackers Love Indian Websites

This is disturbing stuff. Indian websites are the most targeted sites, by hackers. India is the largest emerging IT power and websites of this country are not secure. This is awful. The reverse coding experts (hackers) from many countries like China, Russia, US, Sweden and even Pakistan, targeting Indian websites. Pakistani hackers hack nearly 40 to 50 Indian websites every month. Lets look year wise hacking history of Indian websites:
Year 2001: Over 200 Indian websites were hacked into and defaced. The hackers put in words like bugz, death symbol, Paki-king and allahhuakbar. PRO-PAKISTAN HACKERS infiltrated a Web site of India’s External Affairs Ministry and posted anti-India messages. INFOSYS HACKED - Infosys Technologies Ltd is one of India’s biggest software company. Hackers infiltrated its website and disrupted its banking products site.
Year 2002: Around 300 websites were hacked by Pakistani hackers. Just read this discussions on this Pakistani website.
Year 2003: Pakistani hackers hacked 477 Indian websites, 270 of them in April only. This was an awesome way to enjoy their summer vacation.:P
Year 2004: The Navy website www.nausena-bharti.mil.in went off the servers after a hacker posted anti-war messages.
Year 2005: 373 websites including 25 government sites were hacked.
Year 2006: This year was a golden year for hackers. They hacked more than 2,000 websites including website of Government of Punjab and all websites of Government of Rajasthan.
Year 2007: IIT Kanpur website was hacked. Hacker replaced IIT-Kanpur's logo by McDonald's logo and put some statements like "This site has been sold to McDonald in $ 25 million. The official website of the Maharashtra government was hacked. It had some Arabic content on home page.
Read this interesting article "how this Sweden based hacker managed to hack more than 100 emails and passwords of Indian embassies, he also hacked the emails of NDA and DRDO officials".
Year 2008: Hacker hacked an Indian antivirus company website and used it to spread virus.
Why they do such kind of thing? I think their main purposes are like following:-
  1. To damage the reputation of the company
  2. To prove their might in cyber warfare
  3. To distribute malware
  4. To propagate the sentiments against a particular country
What do you say? Why do hackers waste their invaluable skill in such type of useless work?

Thanx to google, who helped me to collect such tedious data.

Why do we need own domain name?

Bugsnerror now has new home. Finally I got my own domain name. Ya, I registered it in $10 for a year through google's checkout. I would like thank my friend Brahm, who sponsored me. Bugsnerror has been now changed to www.geekonnet.com (geek on net). How is this name? :P

So, why I bought a new domain name? Although I was doing very well on blogspot. There are some reasons for new domain. I think these reasons are common for all bloggers.
  1. To Be Professional: To be professional blogger its essential to have your own domain name. Every domain name is unique, so you will get a permanent unique URL for your blog which will attract more users and hence the traffic of your websites or blog will increase rapidly.
  2. More ADs: You will get more sponsors for your website or blog very easily.
  3. Google Apps: If you buy domain through google checkout then you can use all google apps and 25 Gb of free webspace.
  4. Use Subdomain: You can use unlimited subdomains of your domain. Eg. I can use the subdomain like www.xyz.geekonnet.com. So you can start more websites or blogs using these subdomain. You can also sell these subdomain to your friends.
  5. Email ID: You will get new email ID. eg user@yourdomain. My new email id is ranjeet@geekonnet.com. You can create upto 25 such type of email ids like support@yourdomain.com, job@yourdomain.com etc. Upto 25 users can create their own login at your website.
Google promises that you wont loose your traffic and page rank. I think we can believe google.

PS: Dear bloggers please update my new domain www.geekonnet.com on your blogroll.

Indian Startup of the Month

Hi folks, thanks for your huge support and response which encouraged me and my blog to do better day by day. I haven't dreamed that my blog would grow this fast. I am heartily thankful to all you guys.

I was sitting and running my mind through the growth of different companies when suddenly my eyes halted on the Indian software market. Many multinational companies target Indian market first as they get easy customers and less competition. With all this it is difficult for Indian companies to grow as they have little capital to invest as compared to other multinational companies. It is also observed that most of these multinational companies hire Indian brains as they are the best for the job. Some young generation leave their dream as they think they wont stand this competition and some tries to fight. So the important question arises, how they will survive only on the basis of their talent.

I am starting a new column, "Indian startup of the month". This column will deal with the paths that these startups take to give a fare competition to multinational companies. To know the secret I will catch the growing startups to know their problems and the ways with which they deal it.

I am looking forward for your suggestions on this part so that I can also cover your queries. Mail me or provide a comment about your doubts and queries. My email-ID is ranjeet4u@gmail.com.

War of Online Social Networks

You all know about what is social networking. Through social networking, people keep in touch with current friends, reconnect with old friends, create friendship with people who have similar interests or similar groups. Apart from connectivity people can share their ideas or experiences with other like-minded people. Some networking can also help members find a job or establish business contacts. This is the most demandable business on internet. It grows exponentially and generate huge-huge traffic on internet. There are plenty of social network websites, believe me each and every website is making millions or billions of dollers. If any one is not making that much still it's buy out price is in billion. I use Myspace, Orkut, Facebook and Hi-5. These are some leading social network website. I looked closely these sites and compared their features. See the table which I made,

MySpace has 191 million members. This site is massive, bragging the largest membership of any social networking site on the Internet. Facebook just reached the milestone of 100 million users. It was initially intended for college students. Orkut and Hi5 have 60 and 50 million registered users.
I divided the features in 4 parts.
  1. Profiles: User's personal profile is the heart of any social network website. This is the place where user can do whatever they want. They can express their emotions and feelings. So, this thing should be in favour of users. Users will decide which type of theme, color or background they want to set. Myspace supports these things. You can use your own html or css code and can make own template. Only HI-5 and Myspace provide personal url for every user.
  2. Security: Internet is a dangerous place to put your personal information. But we don't need to worry. These sites are secure.
  3. Networking Tools: It includes additional features like chat room, personal videos, music, blog, forum etc. Only Myspace provides blogging facility.
  4. Search: Efficient and Fast search is the backbone of any social network. As you can in above table, different type of search parameters. These parameters make search fast and efficient. Common parameters are search by email, name, city/zip code. Orkut is backward in searching. Orkut need some improvement in search part.
Their are several like friendster, tagged, linkedIn etc. Which one are you using?

Easy Ways to Increase Blog Traffic

In the last post you have seen "10 ways to make money online". Thanx to Tamal, a professional blogger, who requested me to publish his post on my blog. Thanks dude for sharing such a nice post.
So, Now I will tell you "how can you generate traffic for your blog?". I will tell you, what I learned from blogging. These things really work. Here we go.

1) Unique subject: Whenever I sit to write any post, I just keep on thinking about my world wide readers. Will my post give them, what they are looking for? If some one is spending his/her 5 minutes to read your post then your posts must have that much potential. Your content should be worthy of being read by thousands or millions of readers.

If your blog has good content then It will force the user to come again and again to your blog. At the time of deciding the topic, just think about the best thing you can give to the reader. The topic selected by you should also be of your interest, then only you can write a good post. Next thing is to narrow down your topic. Your blog should be of some specific topic. For Example: There are thousands of tech bloggers and I also wanted to be the one. Since tech is a relatively large area, I narrowed my blog topic down to internet. For example, if some one is interested in writing about "computer networking", he/she can select a particular topic from a whole lot of topics in computer networks like wireless (802.11) network or wired network or for wireless sensor network. So start thinking about the topic on which you are going to write a blog.

2) SEO: For any website the main source of traffic are search engines, mainly from google, yahoo, msn live and ask.com. Optimize your posts for search engines. Ohh, SEO is a very large concept. It will take few weeks or months to understand properly and implement. Dont worry, Just keep few things in your mind which I am going to describe below:
  • Use your primary keyword as domain name for your blog: At the time of purchasing domain name for your blog, try to ensure that the url should contain the word which you want to optimize.
  • Put primary key phrase in your blog header tags and the titles of your post:
  • Submit your blog to search engine's directories: Submit your blog to directories like mozilla directories, yahoo directory, google directory, ask directory. Directories are essential for getting high-quality links back to your blog. I have submitted my blog to all of the above directories.
3) Top blogger directories and forums: Reading forums and participating in forums will help you a lot to become a good blogger. It also generates huge traffic and back links for your blog. Here are some of the top forums. You can join any one or two forums which you like most and actively participate in discussions.
  1. Authority Blogger Forum:
  2. Blog Traffic School Forums:
  3. Bloggeries Blog Forum:
  4. Blogger Forum:
  5. Digital Point Blogging Forum:
Also join some blogger's social networks like blogcatalog and mybloglog, and create your own group there. The members of your group will be your regular readers.

4) social bookmarking and sharing: Put social bookmarks and sharing links in your every post. In blog you can find few links after each post. This link creates a high quality back links and spreads your message to millions of reader. Adding social bookmark links to your blog or web site makes it easy for readers to save and share your content. The most famous are digg.com, technorati.com and del.icio.us.

5) Surfing:
  1. shout box: Install a shout box on your blog. It will help you to communicate with other bloggers.
  2. Blog Hopping: Keep on visiting other's blog. Try to comment on top blogs. It will help you to create good quality back links for your blog and your page rank will increase.
  3. link exchange: Do not hesitate to exchange the links with other bloggers. If possible, try to exchange with only those who have higher page rank than yours. Install alexa toolbar in your firefox to find the rank of any website.
I hope these words from my experience will help you with your effort to increase traffic. Feel free to ask any questions that may arise in your brain.

Thanx for your patience :)

PS: Try to write short and impactful post. :P

The Longest Comment

I received this comment for my post Google Suggest on Main Search page from one of my readers. In this post I had asked a question as PS. The question was this:
what happens when a kid starts a search by typing in some letters than also happen to be the beginning letters of something dirty?
The answer which I received by this unknown, intelligent person is this:

You pose a very interesting question on your PS, one that should be given much more consideration that what has been given so far. If a child accidently stumbles upon a lurid site because of the letter or prefix of the search, and while that is on its face is not a very acceptable, what happens when that same child is doing homework late at night and is half asleep? Will it cause a post hypnotic suggestion? I believe that it may infringe upon one’s ability to have freedom of thought and can confuse someone if they are not 100% aware of what is happening. A good analogy would be a quick change artist who starts counting numbers in the middle of a cash register person making change. The same result is possible and that is a complete unconscious change of thought. While the intentions of the product seem innocent enough, its consequences could have an impact far beyond a typo and could actually change someone’s mind. What mind control? Now that's the way a conspiracy believer may look at it. As for me, I'd rather think of it as a product that may hinder, rather than help the average search user. I would eliminate it if I were google (but then again, they have poeple working for them that are a lot brighter than I am). Also, what happens when more people use it and you lose innovation of the change in which people search for products, are their seach patterns now going to reman constant for services and information? I know Google is trying to help make a better experience for the user - that's their job and if they want to keep market share and grow, they must innovate, but this may be a feature that has the opposite effect on what it is trying to achieve, a better and easier search experience. Advertisers may start writing copy around the pre indexed terms in hopes of rising organically in the search ranking and it may stifle creativity in the long run. Thank you for bringing up this topic as it has meaningful consequences that reach further than its intentions. It really seems innocuous at first, but it isn't.

This comment is 5 times larger than my post. I would like to thank AFS Personal Loans Online (I don't know his name but this is his blogger profile link) and this is his web page.

Chrome, Google's New Browser.

The browser war is back on. This time It is not between Firefox, Internet explore and safari. The big boss of internet world also joined this war. Ya, you got it, I am talking about Google. On Tuesday(today) in 100 countries, Google will release a free Web browser called Chrome that the company said would challenge Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, as well as the Firefox browser. But the question that I have in my mind is "Are Internet Explorer and Firefox ready to do battle with Chrome?"
Current scenario of browser market is like this: Microsoft still holds 73 percent of the browser market. The market share for Firefox has climbed to 19 percent, while Apple’s Safari has 6 percent. Last week, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 beta 2, which includes improved security and new browsing aids. Earlier this summer, Mozilla released Firefox 3, which garnered 8 million downloads in 24 hours.
So Why google is launching new browser??
According to google official blog "Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web." (Directly from google official blog).

What's new?
Google Chrome is an open sourced browser based on the Webkit HTML engine, but adds a new Javascript engine, and some UI changes. To advertise it, they've made a comic, showing the browser's features. Isn't It stupid but brilliant idea, Google is launching its product with a comic. This comic is also available on Google Books There's all sorts of other promises - stability, speed - and Google does have lots of stored sites to test it on.

Interesting: Chrome also puts Google in competition with a friend, the Mozilla Corporation, which manages the Firefox project. Just last week, Google renewed its deal with Mozilla. Under the arrangement, Google Search is the home page for Firefox and Google is its default search bar, and Google makes substantial payments to Mozilla. The agreement runs through November 2011, and will continue.

Its not surprising, after all Google is 100 percent on the web. It would be more surprising if Google didn't do something in the browser space.
